چکیده

In most laboratory mammals benzoic acid is converted into hippuric acid and benzoyl glucuronide (see Williams, 1959), except for the cat, which seems to produce only hippuric acid (Robinson & Williams, 1958, and unpublished data). Jaffe (1877) showed that benzoic acid was converted in hens into ornithuric acid, and benzoyl glucuronide has also been found to be a metabolite of benzoic acid in hens (Baldwin, Robinson & Williams, 1959). It has been assumed that ornithuric acid formation is common to most birds, but, as far as we are aware, there is no evidence to support this. Schachter, Manis & Taggart (1955) have shown that pigeon-kidney slices and extracts form glycine conjugates, whereas kidney preparations from the chicken, duck, goose and turkey do not. They also found that chickenand duckkidney powder formed ornithine conjugates. These studies in vitro suggest that ducks as well as chickens form ornithuric acids whereas pigeons form hippuric acids. In the present paper we shall show, with the intact bird, that chickens, turkeys, geese and ducks excrete ornithuric acid after being dosed with benzoic acid, whereas the pigeon and the related wood pigeon and dove excrete hippuric acid. Neither hippuric acid nor ornithuric acid was found in the excreta of a parrot and a carrion crow dosed with benzoic acid. All the birds examined formed benzoyl glucuronide.

Kinetic Studies of the Catalytic Oxidation of Toluene to Benzoic Acid in the Liquid Phase

The catalytic oxidation of toluene to benzoic acid in the liquid phase has been studied in an un-stirred tank reactor. Low concentration of acetic acid was added in order to increase the solubility of the catalyst in toluene. The dependence of the rate of reaction on the concentration of toluene catalyst and oxygen pressure was studied. It has been suggested that liquid phase oxidation of t...

Determination of the effects of food preservatives benzoic acid and sodium nitrate on lifespan, fertility and physical growth in Caenorhabditis elegans

Presently, the use of protective food additives such as benzoic acid and sodium nitrate is quite common. However, it was found that these additives, which initially appeared to be harmless, led to the emergence of a number of health problems. Cancer and diseases and deaths with no apparent causes are among the leading concerns. Therefore, the studies which can reveal the genotoxic potential of ...

Studies in the Synthesis of Hippuric Acid in the Animal. Organism. v. the Influence of Amino-acids and Related Substances on the Synthesis and Rate of Elimination of Hippuric Acid after the Adminis- Tration of Benzoate.*

The problem of the origin of the glycine available for hippuric acid synthesis after the administration of benzoic acid or its salts has been studied by many investigators with varying results. It should be borne in mind, in this connection, that all species of animals do not react similarly in response to the ingestion of benzoic acid. Thus the organisms of man (l), the rabbit (2), the goat (3...
